GPSR checklist: product-safe in EU trade in 7 steps
Since December 2024, the GPSR has required a designated EU responsible person, clear safety information, and traceability for almost all consumer products. In online trade in particular, clean implementation determines whether your listings stay visible.
This checklist takes you through seven steps from responsibility to the reporting process. It is tailored to sellers, importers, and marketplace vendors. Start with the question of whether a responsible person in the EU exists for every product — without one, sales are not permitted.
Your checklist
- 1Clarify the responsible person: for each product, check whether an EU economic operator (manufacturer, authorized representative, importer, or fulfilment service provider) is designated — for direct imports, ensure this yourself.
- 2Mark products: apply a clear product identifier (type, batch, or serial number) as well as the name and address of the manufacturer and the responsible person.
- 3Provide safety information: add warnings and safety information in understandable language — in the online shop, visible before the purchase is completed.
- 4Create technical documentation: document the risk analysis and protective measures taken, and keep the records for at least ten years.
- 5Meet distributor verification duties: before reselling, check that markings, information, and warnings are present, and resolve doubts in a documented way.
- 6Set up a reporting process: define procedures for corrective measures and for reporting dangerous products via the Safety Business Gateway.
- 7Prepare recalls: organize customer contact data and communication channels so that recalls are effective and a remedy (repair, replacement, refund) can be offered.

Does the GPSR also apply to small online sellers?
Yes. The GPSR distinguishes not by company size but by role in the supply chain. Small sellers also have verification duties and may only offer products for which a responsible person exists in the EU and for which the required information is present.
What must I display for online offers?
Before the purchase is completed, the responsible person, the product identifier, and warnings and safety information must be visible. It is not sufficient to include this information only with the delivery.
How do I report a dangerous product?
Via the EU Safety Business Gateway. If you recognize that a product you have made available is dangerous, you must immediately take corrective measures, inform the competent authorities, warn affected consumers, and offer a remedy.
