The PPWR void-space limit: why a maximum of 40% air in the box is allowed
With the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR), the EU introduces a binding cap on empty space in grouped, transport and e-commerce packaging: it may not exceed 40%. In other words, at least 60% of the box volume must be used by the product and any necessary protective material.
The aim is packaging minimisation: less air in the box means less material, less transport volume and less waste. For online sellers it is also a cost question — oversized boxes drive up postage and licensing fees.

How do I measure void space correctly?
